Publisher Description
The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.
The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.
Customer Reviews
He could not be my therapist
As a masters student in clinical mental health counseling, I was recommended this book and it was a hard one to go through. Hearing these clients stories I felt such deep empathy for many of them, and hearing Irvin thoughts and responses was infuriating. He was so heartless and judgmental at times it was disgraceful. I felt so bad for his clients and coworkers especially the women because the way he would speak about them, to them, and how he was treated them was abhorrent. I did enjoy listening to the stories and how they were structured. It didn’t feel like a textbook or self help read. I was actually able to fall into the story and explore the world as I was listening.
